Here we have the ultimate in 3D printer test models, designed by user CtrlV on Thingiverse free to download. The idea was to create a universal test, differences in the printed models can be compared between different makes of 3D printer and different machines of the same model, that way users can tell if there is a problem with their machine and also use peoples experiences to select a make of 3D printer that works well.

The 3D model file was developed by CtrlV, who works for a 3D printer developer so that they could test their own machines

The model takes ~50mins to print and uses <=4m of 1.75mm filament on a FFF 3D printer. The printer should be set to its best resolution with an infill of ~33%. To check you printers performance check the following attributes:


  • Test attributes

    • Size: the object is 4 x 50 x 50 mm (baseplate)
    • Hole size: 3 holes (3/4/5mm)
    • Nut size: M4 nut should fit perfectly
    • Fine details: pyramid, cone, all numbers
    • rounded print: wave, half sphere
    • minimum distance between walls: 0.1/0.2/0.3/0.4/0.5mm
    • overhang: 25/30/35/40/45
    • flatness: all flat areas
