The Makerbot Digitizer is a desktop 3D scanner that can create digital 3D models of the physical world.
How the Makerbot Digitizer Works
The Digitizer creates 3D model files by taking a rapid sequence of scans of an object as it rotates on the digitizers turntable. There are two lasers, mounted on the left and right hand side of the digitiser that create an outline of the objects profile; a camera in the centre then takes a sequence of photographs of the laser lines. These images are then converted to a point cloud describing the surface of the object by the MakerWare for Digitizer software. The points cloud is a 3D mesh file that can be used to print with. The MakerWare for Digitizer software can export as .STL or .THING files.
If your scan was not complete then it is possible to rescan the object from a different angle. The MakerWare software using its MultiScan technology allows you to combine multiple scans of the same object. The MakerWare for Digitizer software also allows you to combine 3D mesh files using the MeshMixer and you can Sculpt your 3D model file using tools like ZBrush.
So with just two clicks you can create a clean error free 3D model for 3D printing.
Makebot Digitizer 3D scanner Specifications
The Makerbot Digitizer is designed to work with the MakerBot Replicator series of 3D printers but it produces .STL files so can be used to create 3D mesh files for any 3D printer.
