3D printing from two filament spools is not just about printing attractive two tone prints, where it comes into its own is when you combine two different materials in one print. This is especially true when you make use of a soluble support filament like HIPS (for ABS) or a water soluble PVA filament. If you use a soluble support filament as infill this allows you to make very complex parts that would not be possible with a single extruder 3D printer. A dual extruder 3D printer therefore opens up the possibility for 3D printing functional parts.

The Sigma R17 3D printer features
So additional to the Sigma R17’s dual extruder technology it also employs the IDEX hotend system. The IDEX system is a series of swappable hotends with different nozzle diameters and nozzle characteristics. This means you can select the right hotend for the job, saving both time and money, making your 3D printing workflow more efficient. For example you can print your perimeters with a 0.3mm hotend and the infill with a 0.8mm hotend, or, print your model with 0.8mm and detailed PVA supports with 0.4mm.
BCN3D Sigma IDEX hotends come in:

Print up to three times faster without giving up quality: finer outlines and coarser infills.
